I should have mentioned this: The Original Poster was talking about a small personal computer. If he were running a heavily hit server that needed to stay up 99.9999% of the time, I'd recommend LVM, RAID, and anything else designed to keep the machine up when hardware fails or some software writes gratuitously huge or numerous files. When I recommended what I did, it was with the idea that if the machine locked up, which is very rare on a personal computer with good hardware, he could boot from a rescue distro and clean up the mess.
