Thank you everyone for the suggestions and resources. I particularly enjoyed
the paper by Antti Oulasvirta and Barry Schwartz. I do wonder if another
study couldn't be performed that looked at other aspects of data density.
Certainly issues around short-term memory come into play, but I have been
noticing a principle in my own work that I'd call the Goldilocks Principle.
When designing it's important to find that sweet spot of just enough
information. Too little and too much information prevents us from using an
interface effectively. The trick is finding the right amount to act on the
opportunities presented while not being under or over-saturated. If anyone
can think of any other research that has occurred on this topic, I'd
appreciate it.
