About the talk

Since the early 1990s, my laboratory has performed over 100 studies demonstrating that people treat computers like people, that is, people use the same social rules and expectations with computers that they do when interacting with people.  In this talk, I will describe how my lab now uses computers to uncover and describe new social rules that are so basic that any person can apply them easily and that are so broad and effective that every person (or computer) can become more persuasive, likeable, and socially successful.  Issues to be addressed include how to evaluate effectively (e.g., is flattery effective), how to build teams (e.g., why retreats dont work), how to deal with emotions (e.g., sympathy does not help frustration), and how to persuade more effectively (e.g., why being corr
 ect is insufficient).
