hi sanjeev, well, this group is sort of like Alcoholics Anonymous... except that it is to remove CUSATs addiction to Windows ... so it could be called W-user's Anonymous ;) There are no official activities other than the achievement of complete transfer of all CUSAT's IT infrastrucutre to the GNU/Linux platform. You, as a member of the Dept of Physics, could start by development of domain-specific software (ie, the physics domain) on the GNU/Linux platform. This would be a great help. This is assuming that you have no control over the actual IT infrastructure. But if you do have such control, then of course a shift to GNU/Linux for all activities (email, web broswing, chat, etc) should be done. Depending on your interests in Physics, there are some software available. Recently, i saw a piece of software that allows visualization of surface properties of molecules/molecular structures or some such thing. A cursory look at the cusat.ac.in website shows gross disregard for web design norms. It also shows how degraded our academic institutions have become in its speed of assimilating knowledge on the Information Superhighway. One thing that surely can be changed is the status of the IRM unit of CUSAT, where each and ever member is a "certified Windows NT Administrator" ... which is stupid, since Windows NT itself is basically obsolete. Perhaps someone should train them in GNU/Linux. Perhaps, before bringing in GNU/Linux itself to the campus, a technology mindset itself should be propagated. In my time there, I have not found such a mindset. I wonder how CUSAT has Science and Technology in its name.
