It's never unfounded to be cautious. Anything they've added is open source,
and they seem fairly transparent. (https://bugs.launchpad.net/turnkeylinux,

For myself, I think it's a "don't know what you don't know" situation. As a
mid-level Linux user, I think my odds of doing something stupid with a base
system and getting pwned are higher than starting with a community-vetted
project and going through the same security checklists that I would anyway.
