Gentoo would likely be a great 'worst case senario' install but it would
take a huge amount of time.

I have been toying with doing it off a remote VM with a nice beefy system,
but even then it would not be that fast. Something like a Core i7 system
locally may work better than my 4x3.0GHz Xeon server.

With a compile taking 3+ hours, it may need to be done TV-chef style, with
a pre-done VM all ready after the compile stage. Just drop the 'raw'
compile task in, pause the VM and unpause the already-completed VM.
