The automated updates are not so much debian but because of apt. Apt started with another linux distro (I forget which one - which is now defunct) and the debian mob picked it up. What makes apt great is two things: 1) The apt system itself. 2) The repositories of files to download and install. Now I was keen to use debian before for one reason - apt. But now apt is for RH. I know you can get apt for RH9 and the fedora legacy project will maintain a repository for RH9. But I use apt with FC1 and it is great! Love it! The other issue with chines and this is in part based on my experience with e-smith and Chinese language is that the command line also needs Chinese support. That is - the ability to use and display Chinese characters in the terminal. I believe (but do not know for sure - I am guessing) that the Chinese support in X/Gnome/KDE comes from the graphics subsystem libraries. I know that samba has support since 3.0 for Chinese characters but I can't get that to work with Chinese windows and e-smith which uses samba 3.0. So I feel that like there are font and frame buffer support issues for various graphics cards and the terminal - that is also how language support is handled. Each subsystem needs support? Just a guess. Now if your only needs is easier updating and you are happy with RH9. I suggest you check out http://www.fedora.us and look at getting apt (and synaptic for GUI apt usage) installed on your RH9 boxes. >From memory you run a very tight ship with respect to desktop needs, so this may be much easier than going to debian - if all you are after is apt?
