The main reasons for using LDAP are the fact that it is an open
standard.  So as a base for authentication services it is great. 
E-smith for example works with both LDAP and SAMBA and has botgh
implemented.

The beauty is with stuff like LDAP and the PAM framework it is very easy
to use ONE central directory listing and have it form the base of many
services.  From normal name/contact detail lookups, to file share and
domain logon authentication, right up to even FTP and HTTP-AUTH 
authentication.

No more fragmentation between say, Active Directory, NIS, SMB, Shadow
Password's, Kerebos, etc....

Open standard - ease of development and complete integration.....   ;-)

I could do a DEMO which of course comes back to e-smith and how it is
implemented in e-smith and how I have utilised that with add-on
packages....
