Have you tried editing the if-config-??? file manually?

Here is a copy of mine....

STARTMODE=hotplug
DEVICE=ath0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
WIRELESS=yes
MODE=Managed
ESSID=*****************
CHANNEL=**
KEY=*****************

I employ good wifi practices:

SSID Broadcast off.
WEP on.
Non-stanrd ssid name and channel.
And MAC address filtering in the router to only allow authorised cards
to connect.
non standard internal IP address range

The only bad thing I do is use DHCP - which advertises my "obscure" IP
range (if they could break the mac filtering and wep and discover the
hidden essid).
