Modems working with Knoppix/Debian

Following earlier advice from kind readers of this list, I've now got Knoppix up and running and I'm beginning to produce useful work with it. However, I've still not got my winmodem working. Has anyone bought an external modem in BJ which definitely *does* work with Knoppix, or Debian, or at least some sort of Linux? Brands, vendors, prices - whatever info you have.
