well Asus and nvidia are two of a kind (when it comes to Linux, that is).

Have you tried a more recent version of those other Debian-based live
cds available? (I'm thinking of grml 0.7 in particular, see
http://grml.org/files/README-0.7.php).

If you can boot the box from a live cd, it shouldn't be too difficult to
install Debian/Ubuntu on it (did that myself for Debian Sarge a couple
of times).
