RE: GSM or CDMA for mobile email and database?

Well, I ended up buying a Huawei EC321 PCMCIA card with a China Unicom CDMA
SIM.  I've been using it in a Windows XP laptop (sorry, haven't been able to
test under Linux!!!) but under Doze it has worked flawlessly.  It
consistently connects all over Beijing (even from a taxi at 80Km/hour on the
5th ring road) at 230.4Kbps.  The China Unicom data service has been 100%
reliable, and costs a flat 98 yuan a month, with unlimited traffic and
connections.

The Huawei software is impressive (I attached a screendump): fully English,
handles calls and SMS as well as data.  The card comes with a earpiece/mic
so the laptop now doubles as a mobile phone.

All up cost for the card and the Unicom SIM was 800 yuan.  I couldn't be
happier, and I'm now very impressed with Huawei (which I have recently seen
described as "the Cisco of China".

I also bought a USB version for a desktop: same great success.

Anyone have Linux performance to report?
