Hehe, yes.

Yeah, I can do that for heartbeat-type assurance but it means that
monitoring is being done from another box (obviously).  I like to monitor
network utilization etc from my lan so that I properly understand where the
bottlenecks are (I don't trust our building's feed, for one thing - this is
probably why they shut down ping into and out of the building!).
