Re: GSM or CDMA for mobile email and database?

Well, David's USB CDMA modem worked just fine on my PPC Powerbook
running Ubuntu - that's why I was fairly confident that the PCMCIA
card would work. We used the same config file for wvdial. I've changed
it a little, but this is my current wvdial config file, in case it
helps anyone :

$ cat /etc/wvdial.conf
[Dialer Defaults]
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Phone = #777
ISDN = 0
Username = CARD
Init1 = ATZ
Password = CARD
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Baud = 460800
Stupid Mode = 1

I used 'wvdialconf' to make the settings, then added the 'Stupid Mode =
1'
which seemed to be necessary (it was in David's config file).

I don't know the model number of the USB modem, but perhaps it is in one
of David's prior messages, or perhaps he can tell us again?

In some ways, I think the USB modem is a preferable solution to the
PCMCIA card.
The reason we wanted a PCMCIA card is because we want to be able to plug
it
into a router solution later (wifi router with a pcmcia slot), once they
become available in China.
