While Apple has had some recent quality problems in production, unlike the
manufacturers of other laptops I've owned (NEC, Toshiba, TI, Acer,
Fujitsu, and Dell) they have been incredibly responsive at fixing the
problems and doing so in as painless a way as possible. The last serious
problem I had was on my PowerBook 5300s back in 1996, and even though the
machines sucked, Apple made them work, replacing screens, cases, and logic
boards. Both 5300s continue to operate to this day, 8 years and
lord-knows-how-many-cycles later.
My PowerBook 17" has been problem free for a year (knock wood) and my
wife's G4 ibook has been similarly good. The five other Mac Laptop users I
know report similar satisfaction, even under the punishing conditions of
China.
Clearly, my evidence is qualitative and apocryphal, but IMHO, go for it.
In deference to Richard, however, you might want to buy Apple Care for
the machine, so if you do have any problems you won't get nailed.

Be careful of Apple quality. Seems they don't make em like they used
to....
