We are using PDF more and more when documents go out in final form.  It 
reduces problems overall, including the risk of virus transmission.

However, the dominance of MS office has also led to a more collaborative 
way of working - we send drafts to clients and they directly amend using 
mark up etc and send it back.  We also move documents within the office in 
a similar collaborative fashion.

We have found that much of our internal work can be done on computers 
running OOo, but when we do the collaborative stuff with clients, we fall 
back to MSW for the final version because we do not want to risk irritating 
clients. (Then if they get formatting problems they probably blame the 
software, not us).

If MSW documents are being distributed and then "opened" in OOo (or MSW) 
just to read and print, then company policy (IMHO) probably needs to be 
reviewed.  There are just too many risks inherent in the practice and few 
countervailing benefits - PDF is safer, cross platform etc.
