(NYSE: CA) today outlined its strategy to deliver high-value solutions to corporate customers seeking to take full advantage of open source technologies. CA unveiled the open sourcing of CA’s Ingres Enterprise Relational Database and Kernel Generalized Event Management (KGEM), introduced BrightStor Document Manager that incorporates the open source Plone document management engine, and announced collaborations with JBoss, Inc. and Zope Corporation. As a growing number of new technologies are getting their start as open source software, CA has adopted an Open Innovation Model (as outlined in “The Era of Open Innovation” by Henry W. Chesbrough of Harvard Business School). This model promotes the active sharing, use and support for all available internal and external innovations to create the best possible solutions for customers. Under this model, CA will co-develop, promote and support existing and new open source projects and serve as a trusted contributor and powerful advocate for the open source community. “CA has always taken a collaborative approach to software development, welcoming feedback from our customers, partners and other industry leaders,” said Mark Barrenechea, senior vice president of product development at CA. “By extending this approach to the open source community, we are fostering open innovation and accelerating the delivery of management software solutions to meet the needs of our customers.” Major Initiatives Corporate IT organizations have embraced open source software and are demanding enterprise-class quality, scalability, functionality and support for these solutions. By leveraging the power of the open source community, CA is extending its development efforts to meet these customer demands. Ingres Enterprise Relational Database (Ingres) for Linux will be open sourced in 90 days under a CA Trusted Open Source License. Ingres supports the Oracle Cluster File System (OCFS) for Linux Cluster Support and IBM's Distributed Lock Manager (OpenDLM) to deliver new clustering functionality — giving customers the ability to achieve scalability and reliability on a low-cost clustering platform. BrightStor Document Manager, a new addition to the BrightStor family of storage management solutions, combines open source technology from Plone with CA's BrightStor Portal to provide customers with an easy-to-use, cost effective document management solution. Ingres will also be the initial database underlying Zope RDBMS Persistence Engine. “As storage and information requirements continue to increase, Ingres and Plone will set the open source standard for structured and unstructured data management,” said Barrenechea. “With these initiatives, CIOs will be able to leverage trusted open source and ensure enterprise-class support for their information management needs.” Major Open Source Projects CA is also working with other commercial members of the open source community to help drive development of trusted open source technologies: CA and JBoss, Inc. plan to create complete solution comprising open source software that addresses the need for high-performance relational storage in conjunction with J2EE-based Application Servers. CA and Zope plan to provide customers with scalable, open source content management solutions that are compatible with relational database technology and meet enterprise demands for performance, data persistence and manageability. CA is developing and submitting to open source the KGEM instrumentation. KGEM, a new kernel facility that enables management applications to work with Linux in a standardized way. Interfaces for management software can now be built into and shipped with every Linux distribution. CA announced the industry's first open source management technology stack, ijpl (ingres, java, python, linux), that delivers the speed of Ingres, the power of Java and Python, and the quality of Linux to foster growth and innovation of management software. Strong Community Support CA is committed to supporting open source foundations and corporations to further foster open source development and innovation. CA is a founding member of the newly announced Plone Foundation, which will help accelerate the growth and maturation of Plone technology. CA is also an active member of kernel.org, Open Forum Europe, Open Group, Open Source Development Lab and the Embedded Linux Consortium. “Open source has already brought immense changes to the IT market with Linux, Apache, and Tomcat. CA's announcements mean that mission-critical database and content management are now also likely to be driven by open source,” said Robin Bloor, chairman and research director of Baroudi Bloor. “Open source tends to become more successful when it gets the backing of a major software vendor who can help move it into the enterprise.” For additional information on how CA is driving innovation and embracing the open source community please visit http://ca.com/opensource.
