Chris, I never get to spend the HP sort of money :-). Kudzu is probably the best hardware detection but the new debian installer is also greatly improved. Knoppix seems to have the best debian hardware detection so if you have a disk it would be worth seeing how it goes with the mystery NIC. I have some RH 9 disks you can try if it is a physical disk problem.
