I use GAIM on linux and it supports all protocols.

And while their are many clients otu there that are good and support
many protocols.  Most people just stick with MSN or the MAC AIM chat.

This is of course the business strategy of those companies.  But it is
hard to get a user to install new app to do a task they already do with
an existing app that they may find no problem with.
