I'll second that. Kaffeine is a good player, based on the Xine engine.
Totem is the Gnome equivalent. Mplayer is still the most robust for
me, though.

For music I like JuK - I'm tired of the old winamp style interface.
Unfortunately on my work machine Arts' sound quality is quite low.
