Dear all,

Despite my confidence at the last meeting, linux on the desktop can be a
battle at times. More difficult in China than elswhere I suspect
because of the endemic nature of pirated windows.

The supplier of our legal database has "upgraded" their software. The
server still requires Windows (although the actual server software is
apache) and that is the reason that we need at least one windows machine
(It does not work under Xover unfortunately). The "upgraded" software
    now only supports ie clients.

Their literature claims that it supports Netscape, and before it was
fine, but now it is not.

Naturally, we are making as much noise about it as we can with the
current supplier, but we will have to look for a new supplier.

So much for government support of linux.

Having said all that, we are in the process of updating our linux
systems and will be running Ubuntu on the desktop. Mainly because of
the convenient installer.
