Because '清华大学' is not a domain name :-) since it has no dots in it,
firefox first tries a local network address, and if that fails, it
googles. I think IDN isn't supposed to work for local names, so it goes
straight to google instead. Now '清华大学.cn' is quite different.

For the record, the reason gecko browsers show the "raw" domain (the
'xn--*' thing) is a security measure - since there are more than one
possible mappings to the same domain, it shows you exactly what you got,
to avoid phishing. Or something like that, I may be getting the details
wrong - if you're interested in them, google for 'IDN firefox' or 'IDN
mozilla'.
