Amazingly, I was able to get to sites outside of China (this includes beimac.com hosted in the US) even on the day of the tremors. China Mobile's GPRS service is godlike, to say the very least, albeit what we used to call "Intel speed". (Oh the irony! All new Macs now are on Intel! But I digress...) China Netcom had service restored pretty quickly. My DSL line, though, kept dropping -- until this tech guy fixed it. Now I can access sites everywhere. Anonymouse is slow but other proxies are pretty zippy. (It's too bad I can't get to the Wikipedia article on the fear of the number 13... without going thru a proxy.) I'm an intern at Asia TV, too. On the day that the quake hit Taiwan, NOBODY AT ALL could log onto MSN. Very few BeiMac people or mainlanders, at all, were able to log in. Not seeing some of our people on MSN made me feel very odd, bizarre, and whatever word you'd like to slip in here. Now that things are getting back to normal, though... all is well: Apple, Tagesschau Switzerland, and all that ilk, now pretty much back to pre-quake levels, albeit a tad slower.
