Doh!  Wow, I hadn't even considered that possibility.  OK, that changes
my research priorities.  So, I guess there are external drive enclosures 
specialised for NVMe devices?  That can be connected to from host
systems using SATA?

The CompuLab IntensePC itself presents mass-storage external connnectors
of types external eSATA 6Bb/s and external USB of various maximum
speeds. 

If you have time to point me to the generally most-appropriate sort of
external drive enclosures, that would be great.  I'll find time to
explore this during Wednesday, some time.

In my readings about cutting-edge SATA-type SSDs such as the latest
Samsung PRO series units, I found credible reviewers observing that all
such SSDs were effectively bottlenecked by SATA itself, i.e., that the
future has already been inherited by NVMe / PCIe / M.2 stuff.

(On a separate note, yr. humble servant is almost 66 years old, and it's
not entirely clear how much future-proofing is cost-justifiable, flesh 
being grass and all that.)

I do heartily concur that SATA is toast, generally.  So, you're right, 
sinking ~$600 into new SATA would be... highly questionable, if there is
a futureproofed alternative way forward.
