I happened to have the TV on and watched a little of the big speech. Trump said that he had brought the price of eggs down.
I recall that a year ago, a dozen eggs was around $4, with a range of prices at different stores.Over the winter, the typical price went to $5, then $6 It became more common to see empty shelves.Last week, the shelf was full, but price of $11.
So he got it wrong on something quite easy to verify. The effects of tariffs is harder for even unbiased experts.
My guess is that in the short term, prices on many things will go up. Over a period of years, some manufacturing will increase in the US. Some people might get jobs; but increasing manufacturing will take time and a lot of it will be automated, limiting the number of low skill jobs.

There was, what could be argued, was some thought, Ukraine 20% tariff, Россия 0% (I didn't say it was good thinking)
(also see the tariffs on the islands of only penguins)
