My Lenovo Thinkpad T430 (~7 years old) boots up fine in Mint 19.1 based on Ubuntu 18.04 with Linux kernel 4.15. Make sure secure boot is turned off (or legacy boot is on). Mine is set to boot "both" and I am able to interrupt default boot and select a USB with ISO image. I did have to start in "compatibility mode" which has slower video rendering, but I suspect that I could resolve video driver issues after installation and boot normally thereafter. I am leaving it running Win10 right now for various reasons.

Good luck.

I am having problems with finding answers so am rethinking this. I am using new linux distros. How much is this going to be a problem in compatibility with using an old laptop. I am also open to returning this and getting something that is not going to be a problem. I just don't have a lot of time to sort this out. Can someone give me some suggestions on a good laptop that would work for linux distros. I was thinking of something up to $800 that would be a good solution. Something that is fairly compact that I could carry in a packsack, fairly durable. Would consider something used that is fairly recent.

If someone wants to contact me I am at the Peterlougheed Hospital. Ask for Joseph Shuttleworth, Unit 38. Phone 403 943 6638

Thanks for any suggestions and help.

Joe Shuttleworth
