Trouble with backups

I decided to use rsync to do a backup. I the most familiar with. 
I got most of my backups done, but tried making a directory in /media/joe/rbackup/backup.00. Couldn't do it. It said there was already a file there, but couldn't see one. I was trying to make: /usr/local in there. I tried rebooting the laptop, no help.
