1) Try booting with "pci=nomsi" [1]
2) Try fiddling with BIOS settings:  change sata mode from "enchanced IDE" to "ahci"
3) Try swapping cables, RAM chips, and ports on the motherboard.

This sounds like a really obscure/strange/wierd kernel problem.  It seems half an IDE/ATA kernel bug, and half broken hardware.
