Well, my luck with nVidia on linux has not been all that great...but if you wanna play games under windows....well....? I don't know much about ATI nowadays, but I just finished adding a second GeForce 9800 GTX to my latest SLI build, played Call of Duty 4, and needless to say, it kicks ass. But I have yet to run linux on this big guy. I managed to install and run Linux Mint on my older machine and it too ran on NVidia (6600) had compiz working and everything, so I'm assuming the newer ones will work too. What kind of NVidia card are you looking at? Through process of elimination I've determined that it's most likely the video card which is causing the problem, so I need to get a new one. My question is this: NVidia or ATI? The card which I'll be replacing has an NVidia chipset, and I've been very pleased with the driver support for Linux. Last time I looked into it (~5 years ago) ATI's drivers for Linux were not so great (crap, really) and I'm wondering how well their current Linux drivers compare to NVidia's. I'm leaning toward an ATI card for price/ performance, but I want to make sure I won't be sacrificing functionality under Linux just to get a few more FPS for games on Windows. I don't play games under Linux (for obvious reasons), but I like having 3D desktop acceleration and I frequently use the H.264/VC-1 hardware decoding on my NVidia card. The latter is somewhat important for me, as the software decoders for those codecs produce some choppiness on my machine when playing 1080p content.
