I haven't really kept up with ATI's openness, but last I read they only
opened up their 2D drivers.  Also, if you want compiz/3d accel support on
linux... based on past precedance... nvidia is the way to go.

I don't know much about ATI nowadays, but I just finished adding a second
GeForce 9800 GTX to my latest SLI build, played Call of Duty 4, and needless
to say, it kicks ass. But I have yet to run linux on this big guy. I managed
to install and run Linux Mint on my older machine and it too ran on NVidia
(6600) had compiz working and everything, so I'm assuming the newer ones
will work too. What kind of NVidia card are you looking at?
