They have 3D documentation out for ages now, and the open source project has
3d acceleration. That doesn't mean it is anywhere optimized enough for many
games, but it already is usable enough for most distros to include it by
default to give ATI users compiz out of the box.

Ryan: with nvidia, you get drivers that work. Mostly (still bitter about
their overheating chipsets destroying my laptop).
with ATI, you get slower driver updates and they are still trying to change
their early reputation of horrid drivers, but much work is being done on the
open source drivers (much more then possible on the nvidia ones) and their
proprietary drivers are designed to work in Ubuntu.

That said, VPDAU does make a difference. If you really care about HD
acceleration, that is probably your only good choice.
