Posting to this list for help was entirely acceptable in the spirit of
this "bonus" challenge.  Its not a typical assignment and in this class
for this project, using all means necessary to solve the puzzles is
likely within bounds.  You don't have to be taking the class to be able
to get solve this initial part so I invite anyone on this list to give
it a go.

Tony, fyi... I've not seen any useful responses yet.
