---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Aisha Halim <[email protected]> Date: Mon, Mar 12, 2012 at 11:26 AM Subject: Richard Stallman, presenting at UofC, Monday April 2nd To: [email protected] FYI, -Aisha Richard Stallman, founder of the GNU project and the Free Software Foundation, will be giving a talk at The University of Chicago on Monday, April 2nd at 1pm in the Assembly Hall of the International House. This talk will be open to the public. ---------------------------------------------------------- Speaker: Richard Stallman From: Free Software Foundation Web page: http://stallman.org/ Title: Copyright vs. Community in the Age of Computer Networks Abstract: Copyright developed in the age of the printing press, and was designed to fit with the system of centralized copying imposed by the printing press. But the copyright system does not fit well with computer networks, and only draconian punishments can enforce it. The global corporations that profit from copyright are lobbying for draconian punishments, and to increase their copyright powers, while suppressing public access to technology. But if we seriously hope to serve the only legitimate purpose of copyright=97to promote progress, for the benefit of the public=97then we must make changes in the other direction. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------= ---- To UNSUBSCRIBE from the listserv, send a message to [email protected] with SIGNOFF ACM in the message body. -- = Samir Faci *insert title* fortune | cowsay -f /usr/share/cows/tux.cow Sent from my non-iphone laptop. _______________________________________________ DLC mailing list [email protected] http://mailman.depaul.edu/mailman/listinfo/dlc Use the Above Link to Unsubcribe!! http://linux.depaul.edu/
