Even Linus noted a few years ago that it would take a corporate backing 
to get Linux "on the desktop".  Honestly, despite being a long-time KDE 
user myself I don't expect the "desktop" to ever seriously go Linux.

Phones, however, have gone Android, and the top-selling laptops on 
Amazon are all Chromebooks.  So Linux is doing super well... in Google's 
hands.  (Whether that is for better or worse is an open question.)

Also, hi!  I'm still on the list, but haven't even been on campus in 
years since I finished grad school over a decade ago... :-P  I just keep 
forgetting to unsubscribe.
