It is educational to get stuck into conversion, but after doing it enough times, just being able to use a high-performance laptop without having hardware compatibility worries has been a bit of a revelation to me. In fact, I went for four months without needing the command line, except for the occasional SSH - VirtualBox let me do any playing around with compiling random codes or software dev without jacking my actual machine, so that is not incompatible with getting sleeves rolled up and hands dirty. In fact, there's more scope for experimenting when you can clone and chuck a VM without worrying about being able to use X still the next time you boot. The last few months, I have had increasing problems every time I try and do a Linux install on a new shop-bought Win machine (at least in part due to NVidia). It's actually been harder than ten years ago despite all the improvements in installation UI. Also, I do like to support suppliers, as it's the only way to get prices down in the long run. However, it's not cheap, means a significant commitment and if you are new to Linux, dual-booting might be a helpful halfway.
