Can you give a bit more of a description rather than just "didn't work"? It is possible that the issue you've got is simply the 11.10 Ubuntu CD. There were occasional issues with the older versions that sometimes didn't work with the internal screens in a notebook and the screen just seems to stop working after the boot sequence. If it's something like that see what happens if you plug in an external monitor and reboot. Its generally a good idea to go with the latest version and in this case, 11.04 is not supported anymore, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases. The numbering system is year.month so in this case the CD you've got is 2 years 7 months old and in the fast changing world of Linux distros thats a very long time. I'd suggest you go with the latest release, 13.10, or if you're feeling cautious, the latest LTS (Long term service) release, 12.04 (they put out point releases every so often of the LTS releases so you don't have to download so many updates when you first connect to the internet after installing it). If you can't work out your problem before hand, come along to the meeting next Tuesday at Filadelfios and we can try and help you out. I will also have a bootable USB stick with Ubuntu 13.10 on it.
