External hard drives x 2

I have a 1 TB drive that has had a meta data suafu and I want to copy
the data away using dd to work on recovering it.

I have connected the snafued drive to my desktop machine and it has
apeared on /dev/sdb1

I connecte a 2TB drive to recieve the data but it does not apear.

What can i do about this?  is this a known problem?

Th desktop is 3.6.7-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT  x86_64 GNU/Linux
