Just a note that, to my understanding, if you have Intel graphics you
can get 3D acceleration with totally free drivers quite happily. It
won't be a super gaming machine because Intel isn't really in that
market, but I've played some not-particularly-high-end 3D games on it no
problem.

Nvidia cards are going the same way with the free software nv driver I
hear, though I've never actually used it. It is a feat of reverse
engineering, and recently nvidia apparently actually offered them some help.
