Simple hostname -f question

I am configuring a VPS

I have a domain (killmartha.com) that points to it and works fine.

I am trying to install qmail, but I get ab error:

"The hostname -f command returned: $1"

hostname -f from the command line returns "hostname: Name or service not
known"

Searching the Internet leaves me more confused than I started.

I have a /etc/hosts file:

cat /etc/hosts
128.199.199.128 susan.killmartha.com
127.0.0.1	localhost test

(plus some IPV6 stuff)

and my hostname file:

$ cat /etc/hostname
susan

I am a bit perplexed and lost! What have I done wrong?
