Strange problem with wireless

I use both wired and wireless.

Today when I moved my laptop from the wired to wireless zones a lot of
my Internet communications started to fail.

Thunderbird ceased to access smtp server at google

firefox ran very slow and mostly failed to open pages

I could not ssh to a remote host

BUT

Internally all networks seemed fine

I could ping the host I could not ssh to.  200ms, low packet loss (0%
and 4% the two times I did it) and I coud scan the ports

I could telnet port 80 of hosts that firefox could not get pages from.

Using 'route' the routing look very normal

I am puzzled.  Has any one any ideas?

I changed to ubuntu 13.10 recently and all sorts of other things have
gone wrong, but this one seems particularly odd.  I would have thought I
hasd a wireless device problem but the internal network is fine, and the
pings/telnet was fine.  It was just firefox, Thunderbird and ssh when it
comes down to it.
