I also ditched Gnome but I went to Xfce. Installation should be as easy
as

    sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop

or

    sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

If you don't use something like debfoster getting rid of Gnome might be
a little more difficult though.
