My camera (Nikon D7100) doesn't mount as USB disk so I wrote a short script to load them. Let me know if that's your case.

My favourite post-production program is Darktable. I am normally processing from raw files but it can work on jpegs too. You can set it up as simple or as complicated as you like. Check out http://www.darktable.org/ - You might find it in your repository or follow installation instructions from the website for latest and greatest stable version (it's trivial - it's a PPA).
