Donating and crowdfunding

I often see appeals e.g. currently wikipedia who say if everyone gave
$3....  Then there are developers who have a useful app available free but
ask if people could chuck them a few dollars by way of appreciation.  Fair
call, they deserve tangible thanks.
What I would like to know is, what's the best way to send small amounts?
The more of my $$ that gets to them and the less that sticks to the payment
system the better.  Paypal (fees per transaction)?  Credit card (?
security)?  Any other suggestions?
