Colour not important, cost per page is important. I've found the cheap Brother laser printers (HL-2140, etc.) to be really good. Supported by standard CUPS drivers (foomatic), and being lasers, there's not a whole lot that can go wrong with them. Only downside is that the toner cartridge you initially get when you buy it doesn't last very long, but that's to be expected. Toner for 1,500 pages is about $80 or so, as far as I remember.
