Re: Linux using employers in the Otago region

Hi Gary,

We (turboweb.co.nz) are a web development company of six in-house staff 
plus one working remotely. We use Linux as follows:

* Office server - medium specced PC running Debian with Samba to serve 
Windows machines, plus apache to serve up internal support web 
applications and billing/provisioning infrastructure. Also runs 
VirtualBox to provide access to full-time virtual machines for testing a 
range of web applications and websites that we maintain.

* Backup server - inhouse older machine with a big disk. We rsync onto 
this box from local and remote servers and then use rsnapshot to version 
these backups off giving us a rotating backup. Offsite backups are made 
of this server also by way of sneakernet (i.e. I rotate a USB drive 
offsite). Now that I have Fibre at home I have plans to run a mirror of 
that backup server here (when I get time!)

* Two developer PC's, one running Ubuntu Desktop 14.04 LTS, the other 
running 15.04 - these are primarily for web development but also loaded 
with goodies such as VirtualBox for Windows virtualisation and LXC for 
development environment sandboxing. Our general approach for app 
development for medium sized projects is to include scripts to deploy 
LXC containers locally for a developer to work on. Server-side apps on 
these boxes (or containers) include apache, mysql and a bunch of 
supporting tools (composer, npm, compass/sass, gulp etc). The usual 
productivity apps feature also, Firefox/Chromium, OpenOffice, 
Thunderbird, GIMP and Inkscape.

* One dual-boot machine (front-desk demo machine, primary boot to 
Windows) as a spare Linux box should we need to host another in-house 
developer on short notice for a period of time.

* In production - we currently run 12 production servers, all 
virtualised and hosted in New Zealand and Sydney with either 
sitehost.co.nz or rimuhosting.com - these are a mix of Debian and Ubuntu 
servers. We're pretty much led by what our hosting providers recommend 
and tend toward Ubuntu now so that our development environment matches 
more closely (although for what we're doing Debian and Ubuntu are 
effectively equivalent).

* One Raspberry Pi connected to a 40" screen giving us an overview of 
who's working on what and what our billing targets are like for the 
week/month and how far/close/over we are :)

* A bunch of older Mac Mini's running Ubuntu as MAME arcade machines 
.... well, not quite yet but on the very near horizon :)
