I notice that some DVB recorders (which seem to be linux based)  format  flash 
drives  to ntfs format for their usb recording.

All a bit strange when the obvious choice would be ext4 for a linux system.

I think probably fat32 is not a reliable format when writing and reading long 
files.

It seems to be hard to break the windows habit for some manufacturers.
