Hi Geoff, A domain name and hosting are two separate things. The domain name (should) always belong to you, never the hosting company which is unfortunately an all-too-common practice. As the owner of the domain you can then configure the domain to tell others where the DNS server for your domain reside. These servers then can answer any queries for your domain and direct browsers etc. to specific servers - e.g. where your website resides. You have to pay for a domain in advance - e.g. register it for one month to 5 years (maybe more). When it expires in New Zealand it goes into a "Pending Release" state so that you can re-register it if you accidentally forgot to register it, then it's released for public registration. For international domains (e.g. .com's) they release as soon as they expire I believe so you have to be on top of them. Usually registrars like GoDaddy will bug you heaps via email if you are intending to let it expire. For .NZ domains to transfer them the owner of the domain is sent a UDAI code - this code (usually six letters long) is a code that can be used to transfer management - but never ownership - of a domain from one registrar to another. Once a new registrar manages your domain the old registrar will no long send you invoices for renewing the domain. Hope this helps.
