Inconsistent? Sure, sort of. The way I liked, you could pick *icons *text under icons *text So I usually chose t+i, if space was a consideration t only. The picture gradually became familiar and reinforced text in my mind, making it easier and easier to "find where I put it". It's the lack of choice that annoys me, I ~wish~ there wasn't this attitude I've seen in this group and elsewhere, "You need to adapt". I've nothing against the need to adapt to improvements, e.g. learning to touch type even though it was slower because later it would be much quicker. When I changed to linux I was somewhat scared so had dual boot installed, thinking I'd probably take ages to learn how to use email and a search engine and "do some typing" - using word processor program. The different desktop and icons and layout didn't bother me at all - possibly a benefit of not being a visual-minded person. One thing that bothered me a lot, and still does, is the way questions are asked when setting up something. Chances are I know the answer, if only I recognised that the input required is the same as [somewhere else I'd already set up, or had help with]. The other great annoyance, and this is not confined to linux, I came across the same thing when I had to replace my fridge-freezer, is over-designing without including flexibility to use it the old way - because for many of us the old way was great, it SO wasn't broken. To avoid another war breaking out - no fridge-freezer designers reading this I hope - my f-f use is extremely variable. I buy very few ready-mades. Produce gluts are a thing. I cook in bulk because I'm lazy so meat (say) pending big cookup needs fridge, then freezer. I bake 5kg flour + grains into bread, store in freezer. So over-designed storage with innumerable small compartments exactly the right size for packets of frozen This and jars of ready-made That is exactly precision-engineered **wrong** for me, but finding an oldfashioned "sort out your food storage your own way, dear customer" f-f was a real mission. OK, long explanation and the relevance may escape people whose minds aren't my kind of weird/wired. But there can't be many who don't wonder why ~they~ are expected to adapt to what producers now want to produce, when the old product worked really well. Got to go now, iron my flares and brush cat hair off my crimplene jacket with the big shoulder pads.
