A new install will re-write the /var heirarchy, yes. You can restore those copied packages into the cache, but it's not quite as simple as copying them back. I found someone on the Ubuntu forums who has a method that seems to work for them: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=147420 It involves creating a local repository in your home folder that contains the packages you copied onto the DVD. However, there's a better tool that does everything you want, called aptoncd: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=147420 If you still have your old system, it may be worth running this tool, burning to a new DVD and using that?
