Though I like Jim's suggestion, I agree with Robin.

Using screen/tmux in the form of byobu on ubuntu has changed my behaviour
so I rarely actually close the remote shell, I disconnect instead.
Reconnecting later the remote shells are exactly where you left them.  It
is also great when the connection dies because the remote shells don't die.

You can have multiple remote shells open in tabs/windows within byobu.  So,
you can just leave vim running and not ever put it into the background,
instead you just open or switch to another shell.

However, it can be hard to find the shell you want when you have multiple
local terminal windows/tabs open and some of them have multiple byobu
tabs.  I recommend changing the colour of the byobu status bar for
different servers.
